Janie and Jarred’s Waterton Lakes National Park Engagement Session
Janie and Jarred’s engagement session in Waterton Lakes National Park was full of mountain views, winding roads, and the kind of affection that makes photographing a couple feel effortless. They brought along their dog, Foxy, too, so we even made time for a few quick family photos.
We began at Linnet Lake, where the scenery gave us a beautiful place to ease into the session. From there, we made our way to the beach along Waterton Lake for photos with the water and mountains in the background. Waterton has no shortage of stunning views, and each spot gave us a different feel—from peaceful lakeside moments to dramatic mountain scenery.
Mountain roads, shifting light, and a little adventure
One of my favourite parts of the session was heading out for a drive to find a few cinematic shots along the winding road up toward Red Rock Canyon. We photographed on the road along the way; we did not take photos at Red Rock Canyon itself. The curves, mountain backdrop, and sense of motion made for a fun change of pace after our time by the lake.
The light in Waterton can be unpredictable. During this session, we moved from direct, bright sun to deep mountain shade that seemed to arrive in an instant. That mix is part of the beauty of photographing here, but it also means timing matters—especially if you’re hoping for golden hour light.
For engagement and couple photos in Waterton Lakes National Park, I often recommend a late-afternoon start. It gives us time to work with the full sun while it’s available, then take advantage of softer light in the shade as the sun shifts behind the mountains. With a little flexibility, we can create a variety of photographs while keeping the light flattering and even.
Foxy’s mountain-field moment
Foxy was right at home among the mountain fields. She loved running through the grass, and her excitement brought such a joyful energy to the session. We paused for a few quick family photos so Janie and Jarred could include their favourite four-legged companion in the memories. Those little in-between moments often become some of the most personal photos from a session.
A couple so in love
Janie and Jarred are getting married in Medicine Hat next June, and their connection made this session especially fun to photograph. They’re so clearly obsessed with each other—in the sweetest way—and that kind of comfort and affection comes through naturally in photos. My job was easy: give them space to be together, find beautiful light, and capture the way they look at one another.
