How to Have a Beautiful Wedding Under $15,000—and Still Hire a $5K Wedding Photographer (wink)
The average cost of a wedding in Canada is now approximately $30,000-$40,000, with the average cost of a wedding being $32,000. Getting engaged is exciting, but when you start shopping around for venues, caterers, attire, florals and the rest it can feel soul crushing if you thought a wedding would only cost you a few grand.
Planning a wedding on a budget doesn’t mean sacrificing the things that matter most. For many couples, photography is one of those non-negotiables. After all, once the day is over, your photos are what you’ll treasure for decades to come. They will hang over your fireplace and live inside wedding albums that your grandkids will gather around for generations. The good news? You can absolutely plan a gorgeous wedding for under $15,000 while still investing in a $4,500-$5,000 professional photography—you just need strategy, intention, and a little creativity.
Prioritize Your Must-Haves
Start by deciding what truly matters to you as a couple. If hiring a high-quality photographer is a top priority (it should be!), allocate that portion of the budget first. With photography set at $4,500-$5k, you still have $10,000 to work with—plenty for a meaningful celebration when you spend with intention. Cut back on areas that don’t rank as high on your priority list. Ask yourselves: What will we remember in five years? What can guests live without?
Choose a Smaller Guest List
The fastest way to stretch your budget is by reducing your guest count. Every person added increases your catering, rental, and decor costs. A wedding of 40–80 guests not only lowers expenses dramatically but also creates a more intimate, personal experience. It also means you can choose smaller venues, fewer tables, fewer centerpieces, and a more relaxed, intentional vibe. This also makes typically awkward conversations with distant friends and extended family (who may expect to be on the guest list) easier - "we are having a low key, intimate wedding due to our budget."
Consider Non-Traditional Venues
Venue costs often take the biggest chunk of a wedding budget. Think beyond traditional grand venues and look into restaurants, art galleries, parks, or family-owned spaces. Venues like The Venue of New Hope and Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens offer an extremely budget friendly option for couples who don't have access to a family property and want a large space to gather and celebrate in. Many of these options require minimal decor because the character of the venue does the work for you—and some even include tables, chairs, or catering, which reduces rental costs.
Low Cost Catering Options
Some of the best weddings I have photographed or attended literally did a PIZZA BAR. I'm talking, they ordered a ton of pizza during Pizza Hut's $5 $5 $5 deal and their guests absolutely loved it (so did I!). Pizza, buns and salad are compatible with all of your guests dietary restrictions, as most pizza places offer gluten free, vegetarian and even vegan pizza options. This laid back meal can be dressed up by renting stackable pizza warmers (some pizza shops may even let you rent theirs). Another fantastic option is hosting a taco bar or donaire bar, which is a low cost option available through restaurants like Taco Del Mar and Opa. The most cost effective dessert station is typically a doughnut wall or mix and match dessert tables - you can make, frost and freeze your own small cake for your cake cutting moment/flash photos well in advance so you aren't burdened by the task.
Simplify Decor and Florals
Minimalist decor is stylish and increasingly "on trend". Think candles, greenery, and single-bloom arrangements. Opt for locally grown, in-season flowers from your local nursery / Costco or mix fresh florals with high-quality faux pieces from local budget friendly rental companies. Renting decor instead of buying is another easy way to save without sacrificing aesthetic. Foraging greenery for your head and guest tables is another fantastic option within Lethbridge and the surrounding area!
Choose a Weekday or marry during slow Season
Venues, caterers, and florists often offer lower rates for weekday weddings or dates in the off-season. You get the same high-quality services at a fraction of the cost—and more vendor availability. Many couples do not choose a wedding date based on significance (example a first date anniversary) and end up booking based on warm weather during the high wedding season because that just seems right. However, rates are always higher for venues during this time and booking a wedding venue in off season can save you up to 40-50%!

Attire
Online shops such as Birdie Grey offer beautiful, simple dresses in Matte Satin White. Another online shop that offers stunning and affordable dresses is Flutter Dress! The online world has opened brides up to host of traditional and non traditional wedding attire for less than $500 and is worth looking into. I have photographed several brides who bought their wedding dresses for less than $200 on Amazon - it is definitely a thing. Thrifting has also become increasingly popular as dresses that were once 2-4K sit in the back of brides closets and take up space, leading to them eventually being handed over to a local thrift shop. So many brides end up dropping their dresses off after their attempts to sell them online fail and vintage dresses line the back of almost every thrift shop in the area. Renting a dress is also an option if hanging onto your dress for decades isn't your top priority.
Bridal accessories such as white heels, bridal flare and even cathedral veils are available on Amazon, Shein, Temu and local shops for literally under $30. You can assemble wedding attire for next to nothing if you know where to look.
Focus on What Truly Matters
A budget-friendly wedding is not a lesser wedding. It’s a wedding crafted with intention. When you allocate funds to what’s important—like a photographer who will preserve your memories beautifully—the rest of your budget can be used creatively to build a celebration that feels meaningful, personal, and completely you.
As a full time wedding photographer, I have worked with couples in all budget brackets - I've shot weddings with a $40k budget and have shot weddings with a $15k or lower budget and honestly - I have done a few intimate weddings where I (photography) was 70% of the couples entire budget.
