Everything Newly Engaged Couples Need to Know About Planning Their Dream Wedding in Lethbridge & Southern Alberta

First of all - Congratulations!

If you've recently gotten engaged, welcome to one of the most exciting seasons of your life. Whether you're planning an intimate mountain wedding, a backyard celebration, or a luxury wedding at one of the best wedding venues in Lethbridge, Alberta, there are dozens of decisions ahead.

After photographing weddings throughout Southern Alberta for years, I've seen exactly what makes a wedding day feel effortless—and what causes unnecessary stress.

This guide walks you through every stage of planning so you can enjoy your engagement while creating a wedding day that's beautiful, meaningful, and completely your own.

Before You Book Anything

Take a deep breath.

Pinterest is amazing for inspiration, but before falling down the rabbit hole of dresses, flowers and décor, sit down together and answer a few important questions.

Decide on:

- Your wedding budget

- Approximate guest count

- Wedding style

- Preferred season

- Indoor vs outdoor ceremony

- Traditional or non-traditional timeline

- Priorities (Photography? Food? Venue? Entertainment?)

Every decision after this becomes significantly easier.

Book Your Wedding Venue

Your venue determines nearly everything else.

Popular wedding venues in Lethbridge and Southern Alberta often book 18-24 months in advance, especially for June through September Saturday dates. Decide if your date is flexible, or if it will be set around an anniversary or meaningful date; if your date is flexible and you are open to a weekday or Sunday wedding, you may have the lions share of availability and also save money on your venue during off season or for week day wedding dates.

Some of my favourite Aberta venues include:

- The Norland Historic Estate

-The Countryside Barn

- Black Barn

-The Valley

-Roots and Roses

-The Lakehouse

-Archway Manor

-Whitewood Barn

-Spring Break Flower Farm

- Paradise Canyon Golf Resort

- The Galt Museum

- The Italian Canadian Cultural Centre

Choosing your venue early allows you to confidently secure your remaining vendors.

Book Your Wedding Photographer

(Before They're Gone)

If there's one piece of advice I give every couple...

Book your photographer early.

Unlike flowers or rentals, your wedding photographs become the one investment that increases in value every year and even becomes even more valuable to the generations that follow.

Your dress is packed away.

The cake is eaten.

The flowers die.

Your photographs become your family's first heirlooms.

The best wedding photographers in Lethbridge often book 12-24 months in advance, especially for peak summer weekends. If you fall in love with a photographer or have one in mind even before you got engaged, reach out as soon as possible to check their availability. I had to turn down 9 wedding inquiries for the same upcoming Saturday date this season, and I felt so bad! Confirming availability with your photographer before you sign your official venue agreement is a great option to ensure they can be there with you. <3

When choosing your photographer, look beyond pretty Instagram photos.

Instead, look for and ask:

- Can they handle difficult lighting?

- Can they photograph real emotions?

- Do they help with timelines?

-How long do we have to wait to see the photos?

- Do they know the best photo locations?

- Can they keep your day relaxed?

-Can they direct our family and bridal party?

- Will they help you feel comfortable in front of the camera?

- Do they have experience photographing weddings in Southern Alberta weather?

-Do they include an engagement session, or do they just show up on the day?

Your photographer spends more time with you than almost anyone else on your wedding day.

Choose someone whose personality makes you feel completely at ease and can give assistance and expert advise when needed.

Find Your Wedding Dress

Many brides are surprised to learn that wedding dresses can take 6-10 months to arrive, or alter to perfection.

Plan ahead.

Schedule appointments early and leave plenty of time for alterations.

Pro Tip: Schedule a Bridal Portrait session with your photographer to test run your wedding hair and makeup and get beautiful, calm and unrushed photographs in your wedding dress. This saves time and room in your wedding timeline for other things on the day.

Create Your Guest List

This is usually the hardest part.

Remember:

Invite the people who truly support your relationship.

Not everyone who expects an invitation necessarily deserves one - sorry, not sorry.

Your guest list is the number one factor that affects overall wedding budgets - plan to spend $40-$100 per head on catering and select your first round of invites based on true importance. Having a "second round list" is a great idea so when you start seeing RSVP's "NO" you can send out your next round of invites to those you couldn't include in the first mailer. Pre-print extra save the dates for this reason.

Send Save the Dates

Ideal timing:

8-12 months before your wedding.

Especially important if:

- Guests are travelling

- Destination wedding

- Long weekends

- Summer weddings

- Mountain weddings

Plan Your Engagement Session

One of the biggest secrets to amazing wedding photos?

Engagement sessions.

They help you:

- Feel comfortable together

- Learn natural posing

- Build trust with your photographer

- Discover what photographs best

- Reduce wedding day nerves

By the wedding day you'll already know exactly what to expect. I include a complimentary engagement session for all of my couples, so I truly get to know them, their personality and comfort levels and know exactly the kind of images they will love to see in their wedding gallery. Find out if your wedding photographer includes sessions and truly get to know them before the wedding - it makes ALL the difference in how you feel and photograph on the day.

Pro Tip: Book your engagement session for a date prior to your wedding invitation delivery. If you are not sending out save the dates, make sure to book your engagement session early so you have your images back and available for your wedding invitations to be sent out as soon as possible.

Build Your Wedding Timeline

One of the biggest differences between stressful weddings and relaxed weddings?

A realistic timeline.

Things couples often underestimate:

- Hair & makeup

- Family photos

- Travel time

- Sunset portraits

- Ceremony delays

- Bustling dresses

- Greeting guests

-Reapplying makeup/reception outfit changes etc.

A well-planned timeline creates room to actually enjoy your day.

PS: I create a custom wedding timeline for every one of my clients, so they know exactly what to expect in terms of realistic time spacing and images they will receive from each portion of the day.

Think About Light

One thing couples rarely consider...

Light.

Photography isn't just about beautiful locations.

It's about beautiful light.

Planning your ceremony around late afternoon or even sunset (in some situations) rather than convenience often creates dramatically better wedding photographs. Ask your wedding photographer for help with ceremony times and tips on the best lighting for the best photography outcomes. A great photographer can photograph in any light, but will set your expectations accordingly if you choose a noon ceremony start time.

This is one reason experienced photographers are involved in timeline planning.

Consider + Prepare For Your Detail Photos

Gather everything in one box before your wedding morning.

Include:

- Rings

- Invitation suite

- Shoes

- Veil

- Perfume

- Jewellery

- Vows

- Boutonnieres

- Ribbon

- Family heirlooms

These details tell the complete story of your wedding.

Plan Time Together

One of the biggest regrets couples tell me?

"We wish we'd spent more time together."

Build intentional moments into your timeline.

Whether that's:

- First look

- Private vows

- Sunset portraits

- Quiet drink together

These often become your favourite memories.

Trust Your Vendors

You hired professionals for a reason.

On the wedding day:

Stop worrying about tiny details.

Be present.

Laugh.

Cry.

Dance.

Hug your people.

Enjoy every single moment- it goes SO fast.

That's where the magic happens.
