Madi & Jackson’s Engagement Session at Popson Park & Downtown Lethbridge

Some couples make my job so easy, and Madi and Jackson were absolutely two of those people! From the moment we met, it was so sweet to watch how completely obsessed they are with each other. The way they look at one another, laugh together, and naturally gravitate toward each other makes photographing their relationship such a joy.

We met up for their engagement session at Popson Park before heading into downtown Lethbridge for a second look, creating a beautiful mix of natural scenery and urban-inspired portraits. And while the weather definitely wasn't giving us the warm, sunny engagement session conditions you might picture, we still came away with a gallery full of images I absolutely love!

If you're looking for engagement photo inspiration in Lethbridge, Madi and Jackson's session is a perfect reminder that you don't need perfect weather or a lush green landscape to create photographs that feel beautiful and meaningful.

Engagement Photos at Popson Park in Lethbridge

We started Madi and Jackson's session at Popson Park, one of the lovely natural locations around Lethbridge for couples who want outdoor engagement photographs. I'll be honest: it was COLD! The grass was brown and dormant, the sky was completely overcast, and we definitely weren't working with those warm, golden autumn colours or lush summer greens. But that's the reality of photographing couples in Southern Alberta, and honestly, I love finding beauty in every season. Overcast skies can create beautifully soft, even light, which is wonderful for portraits. And while the landscape might look a little different during the colder months, the scenery can still provide a gorgeous natural backdrop. More importantly, the photographs aren't really about the grass or the weather. They're about the two people standing in front of my camera.

And these two made it so easy.

I absolutely love photographing couples who are completely wrapped up in each other. Madi and Jackson have that kind of connection where you can tell they genuinely enjoy being together, and I could happily photograph that all day long. The little looks, the smiles, the way they naturally lean into each other — those are the moments that make an engagement gallery feel personal rather than posed.

My approach to engagement photography is all about creating space for those genuine interactions while offering enough direction that you never have to wonder what to do in front of the camera. You don't need to know how to pose or have any experience being photographed. You just need to show up ready to spend some time with your favourite person!

A Second Look in Downtown Lethbridge

After our time at Popson Park, we headed downtown for a second look and a completely different atmosphere.

I love incorporating two locations into an engagement session because it gives us the opportunity to create variety throughout the gallery. The natural landscape at Popson Park offered one feel, while downtown Lethbridge brought a more urban, editorial look to their photographs. It's a great way to get a little more personality into your engagement gallery without having to travel far.

Downtown Lethbridge offers interesting architectural details, city streets, and plenty of opportunities for photographs that feel a little more modern and fashion-inspired. Paired with the natural scenery from earlier in the session, it gave Madi and Jackson a lovely mix of images. And despite the cold, the cloudy skies, and the less-than-green scenery, we made it work!

This is one of the things I love most about photography: you don't need everything to be perfect to create something beautiful. Sometimes the weather doesn't cooperate, the season isn't what you imagined, or the location looks a little different than it did in the photographs you saved for inspiration.

That's okay.

My job is to work with what's in front of us, find the best light and angles available, and make sure you walk away with photographs you love.

Planning Their 2028 Wedding

Madi and Jackson are planning their wedding for 2028, and when they reached out to me, they wanted to get their engagement photographs taken before officially booking their wedding photography. I think this is such a lovely way to approach the process! Choosing your wedding photographer is a big decision, and I want couples to feel comfortable with the person who will be there documenting one of the most important days of their lives. An engagement session is a wonderful opportunity to get to know each other, experience what it's like to be photographed together, and see how you feel about your images before making that commitment.

There's no need to have every wedding detail figured out before celebrating your engagement. I love getting to know my couples early in the planning process. By the time the wedding arrives, we've already spent time together, they've experienced my approach to photography, and we can head into the wedding day feeling much more comfortable with one another. And getting to photograph them during this season of their lives is something I'm so happy we got to do!

Why I Love Engagement Sessions in Southern Alberta

As a Lethbridge wedding photographer, I love that we have so many options for engagement photography right here in Southern Alberta.

From natural spaces like Popson Park to the character and charm of downtown Lethbridge, there are so many ways to create a gallery that feels unique to each couple. You don't need an elaborate location or perfect conditions. You don't even need to know how to pose! Some of my favourite photographs come from couples simply being themselves, laughing together, stealing kisses, and forgetting about the camera for a little while. And if you're worried about scheduling your engagement session during the colder months, please don't let that stop you. We can work with the season, find flattering light, and choose locations that complement the look you're going for.

Madi and Jackson's session was the perfect reminder that even on a freezing, overcast day with brown grass everywhere, you can still create beautiful photographs when the connection between two people is at the heart of it all.
