There is something so special about a mid-August wedding in Southern Alberta—the long summer days, warm golden light, and the feeling that summer has nowhere else to be. James and Alyssa’s intimate wedding at The Center Trail Venue in Fort Macleod was exactly that: warm, joyful, personal, and filled with the people who matter most.
With just 70 of their closest friends and family surrounding them, their wedding day felt incredibly intentional. From getting ready separately at their parents’ homes in Nobleford to portraits around Fort Macleod, every part of the day felt relaxed, meaningful, and completely theirs.
Getting Ready in Nobleford
The day began in Nobleford, where James and Alyssa got ready separately at their parents’ homes.
There is something I love about photographing this part of a wedding day. Before the ceremony, before the champagne and dancing, before everyone is together, there is this quiet anticipation. Family members are moving around, details are coming together, and the excitement slowly builds.
It also gave us the opportunity to document the people and places that have been part of James and Alyssa’s lives long before their wedding day.
Eventually, it was time to head toward Fort Macleod and The Center Trail Venue for the celebration.
An Intimate Wedding at The Center Trail Venue
Their celebration at The Center Trail Venue was intimate in every sense of the word.
With approximately 70 guests, the day had that wonderful balance of being a true celebration while still feeling incredibly personal. James and Alyssa were surrounded by the people who know them best—family and friends who had been part of their story and were there to celebrate this next chapter with them.
And then there was the Southern Alberta summer weather.
Fort Macleod Wedding Portraits
One of my favourite parts of James and Alyssa’s wedding day was venturing away from the venue for their secondary location portraits around Fort Macleod.
We made stops at Holy Cross Church and the famous single-lane MacKenzie Bridge, giving their wedding gallery a variety of landscapes, architecture, and textures beyond the venue itself.
The MacKenzie Bridge in particular was such a fun location for portraits. There is something about incorporating recognizable Southern Alberta landmarks into a wedding gallery that makes the images feel connected to the place where the couple got married.
For couples planning a Fort Macleod wedding, incorporating a few nearby portrait locations can be such a great way to create a gallery that feels more like a visual story of the entire day rather than simply documenting one location.
A Wedding Filled With Drinks, Dancing & A Little Cake Smash
Once the formalities were over, it was time to party.
There were drinks, laughter, dancing, and plenty of moments where everyone completely let loose. And, of course, no wedding celebration would be complete without a little cake smash.
The reception was the kind of party where the energy just kept building. Seventy people may be an intimate wedding guest count, but when those 70 people are your favourite people, the dance floor can still get VERY busy.
And that is one of the things I love most about smaller weddings: there is nowhere to hide. Everyone is involved. Everyone knows each other. Everyone is genuinely there to celebrate the couple.
The Little Moments That Made Their Wedding Day
While the big moments—the ceremony, portraits, reception entrance and first dance—are important pieces of a wedding gallery, it is often the smaller in-between moments that end up telling the story of the day.
A parent helping with the final details.
A friend laughing across the table.
A quick drink between events.
A sweaty hug on a 25-degree afternoon.
The look on someone's face while watching the couple dance.
The completely unplanned chaos of a cake smash.
The dance floor getting progressively more ridiculous as the night goes on.
Those are the moments that surround the big milestones and make a wedding gallery feel alive.
A Beautiful Southern Alberta Wedding
James and Alyssa’s mid-August wedding at The Center Trail Venue was a beautiful reminder that a wedding doesn't have to be huge to feel significant.
It can be 70 people.
It can be your parents' homes in Nobleford.
It can be a hot afternoon in Fort Macleod.
It can be portraits at Holy Cross Church and the MacKenzie Bridge.
It can be drinks, dancing, cake everywhere and a room full of people who genuinely love you.
And honestly, that sounds like a pretty perfect wedding day to me.
