Emily & Ethan’s Popson Park Engagement Session In Lethbridge, Alberta

There’s something about photographing a couple who tells you right away, “We’re not really comfortable in front of the camera, but we are up to try anything you suggest.”

Honestly? I love it.

Emily and Ethan’s engagement session at Popson Park near Lethbridge, Alberta was all about taking the pressure off and figuring out what actually felt natural for them.

Instead of expecting them to magically know what to do with their hands, where to stand or how to pose, we spent the session practicing simple prompts and poses together. We tried different things, laughed through the awkward moments and quickly figured out what felt like them.

And that’s exactly what engagement sessions are for.

By the end of the session, Emily and Ethan were much more comfortable in front of the camera, and we had plenty of genuine moments mixed in with beautiful, guided portraits. No forced poses. No pressure to perform. Just the two of them getting comfortable being photographed together.

Getting Comfortable Before the Wedding Day

One of my favourite reasons to photograph engagement sessions is that they give couples a chance to experience what it’s actually like to be in front of my camera before their wedding day.

Emily and Ethan are getting married next September at The Byre wedding venue near Lethbridge, Alberta, so this session was the perfect opportunity for us to learn how they naturally interact, what poses feel comfortable and how I can guide them on their wedding day.

By the time their wedding arrives, they won't be wondering what they're supposed to do during portraits. They'll already know that I'll guide them through it — and that they don't have to be naturally comfortable in front of a camera to get beautiful photographs.

Popson Park Engagement Photography

Popson Park was the perfect setting for their engagement session, with its beautiful Southern Alberta landscape and plenty of space to wander, slow down and let the session unfold naturally. I love taking couples here because it is so private, with few interruptions or stepping aside for runners/walkers to pass by us. Couples can truly feel free to be themselves, express their love and be allowed to look a bit goofy when there aren't huge crowds passing by.

The goal was never to create a perfectly posed version of Emily and Ethan.

It was to photograph Emily and Ethan being Emily and Ethan. <3

I can't wait to see these two back in front of my camera next September for their The Byre wedding near Lethbridge. If their engagement session was any indication, it's going to be such a good day.
