Cy & Lisa's Downtown Lethbridge Engagement Session | Modern City Romance Before Their November Wedding
When couples tell me they want something a little different for their engagement photos, downtown Lethbridge is always one of my favourite places to suggest. Between the historic architecture, modern buildings, hidden alleyways and endless variety, it's the perfect backdrop for couples who want a gallery that feels classy, timeless and a little editorial.
Last week, I met up with Cy and Lisa after they made the drive down from Calgary for their engagement session, and despite the weather trying its best to work against us, we had an incredible evening together.
It was one of those classic Southern Alberta summer days—33 degrees, hazy skies from the wildfire smoke and not exactly the dreamy sunset photographers hope for. But honestly? You'd never know it from their gallery. Between the beautiful locations and these two looking effortlessly comfortable in front of the camera, everything came together perfectly.
Cy and Lisa arrived dressed to impress. Their outfits fit the downtown vibe so well and complemented every location we visited. We explored several areas around downtown Lethbridge that I had chosen specifically because each one offered something completely different—from clean modern lines to textured brick walls, historic architecture and quiet streets that gave us plenty of opportunities for candid street photography.
One of my favourite stops was around Silla, where the sleek city atmosphere gave their gallery a modern feel. We also stopped by a beautiful Catholic church, which felt especially meaningful as they shared stories about their upcoming November wedding ceremony in a stunning Catholic church before celebrating with family and friends at SALTLIK. Hearing couples talk about their wedding day is always one of my favourite parts of engagement sessions, and it made me even more excited to photograph their big day later this year.
These two honestly made my job easy. Some couples need a little time to warm up to the camera, but Cy and Lisa looked completely natural together from the very beginning. They fell into poses effortlessly, laughed together naturally and trusted my direction while still making every photo feel like them.
Of course, we had to take advantage of Cy's bodybuilding background. One of the highlights of the evening was watching him effortlessly lift Lisa onto his shoulder for some fun, playful photos that perfectly captured their personalities. Those unexpected moments often end up becoming some of my favourite images because they show genuine connection instead of perfectly posed smiles.
As we wandered through the streets of downtown, we mixed relaxed walking shots with more editorial-inspired portraits, giving them a gallery full of variety. From dramatic architecture to quiet side streets, every location brought a different look while still telling one cohesive story.
Engagement sessions are about so much more than beautiful photos. They're an opportunity to slow down, spend time together and get comfortable in front of my camera before the wedding day. By the end of our evening together, it felt less like a photo session and more like hanging out with friends while exploring the city.
