Rachel & Alistair's Downtown Lethbridge Engagement Session

Historic Architecture, Coffee Shops & An Urban, Romantic Photo Session

Some couples know exactly what they're looking for when searching for their wedding photographer, and Rachel and Alistair were one of those couples!

Almost 18 months before their wedding day at Norland Historic Estate, they reached out to me to inquire about wedding photography. Living in Calgary, they had spent considerable time researching photographers before finding work that matched the vision they had for their celebration. They were planning a romantic garden party wedding with an emphasis on rich, deep greens and timeless elegance, and were drawn to the darker, moodier editing style that has become a signature part of my work here in Lethbridge.

After securing their date and booking their wedding photography, we put a pin in planning their complimentary engagement session, until closer to their wedding date, when they would be making the drive down from Calgary to meet with a few of their other key vendors.

One of my favourite things about engagement sessions is that they allow couples to choose a location that feels authentic to them. Rather than focusing solely on scenic landscapes, Rachel and Alistair wanted something that reflected their personalities and felt a little different from the traditional engagement session.

Downtown Lethbridge proved to be the perfect fit for their romantic, urban/downtown vision.

The afternoon began with a visit to some of the city's most charming local businesses, including The Penny Coffee House, Silla, and one of downtown's historic cigar shops. These locations added personality and variety to their gallery while helping create a relaxed atmosphere where we could simply wander, chat, and get to know each other before their wedding day. As we explored the downtown core, we incorporated some of Lethbridge's beautiful historic architecture into their photographs. The textured brick walls, character-filled storefronts, and timeless buildings created the perfect urban backdrop while complementing the romantic aesthetic Rachel and Alistair were drawn to from the start.

What made the session especially fun was how naturally these two fits together. Seriously, their chemistry was so undeniable to me and photographing all the stolen and sweet glances they kept sharing was a definite highlight for me.

Rachel and Alistair first met on Tinder, and what began as a simple swipe quickly turned into years of adventure together. Since then, they've spent countless weekends rock climbing, travelling, and exploring new places side by side. That adventurous spirit was evident throughout the session as they eagerly followed me through alleyways, around street corners, and into unexpected locations that caught my eye as we walked.

They were incredibly outgoing, easygoing, and willing to trust the creative process, which always leads to the best photographs.

One of the biggest benefits of engagement sessions is the opportunity to become comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day. Throughout the evening, we practiced prompts, movement, and posing while learning what felt most natural for them as a couple. By the end of the session, any nervousness had disappeared and we were left chatting over each other in excitement as we dished about the upcoming wedding.

With their Norland Historic Estate wedding on the horizon, this session felt like the perfect beginning to their photography experience. Between the historic architecture, local businesses, and the vibrant energy of downtown Lethbridge, we created a gallery that felt uniquely personal while building the connection that helps wedding days run so smoothly.

Rachel and Alistair, thank you for making the trip from Calgary and trusting me to document this season of your lives. Spending the afternoon grabbing coffee and exploring downtown with you both only made me more excited to photograph your wedding day.
