wedding trends you'll see on social media in 2026
(and why that is great for me - as a storytelling wedding photographer)
Documentary + Editorial Storytelling
Couples are increasingly opting out of rigid, posed portraits in favor of real, emotional storytelling. As a wedding photographer who is always hunting for raw, emotional moments during a wedding day - this trend is one I can definitely get behind.
Expect:
Less staged, more candid, fun prompts
Big focus on laughter, interactions with guests + wedding parties, and natural expressions
Blending documentary "candids" with editorial style—like magazine-worthy spread (LOVE)
Natural Light & Breaking Up Couples Portraits
Couples are favoring soft light, golden hour, and dramatic shadows within their venues for authentic interactions that tell the true story of their day. Many of my couples are breaking up their couples portraits between late afternoon and golden hour (at my suggestion) for a variety of lighting options. The afternoon is a natural break in your day, a short time to be together as newlyweds following the ceremony and family portraits; so take this break and grab some pictures here - we will still carve out time to pull you away later in the reception for that beautiful golden hour glow.
Dramatic Composition
Expect:
Bigger emphasis on framing and dramatic angles
High visual impact = more landscape focused portraits
Creative use of light, including external lighting like window frame photo flashlights (yep, I got two!)
Low light first dance shots - while flash has it's place, low lighting is coming back to set the stage for dramatic first dance portraits

Focus on Emotion Over Perfection
2026 wedding trends point toward capturing the feeling of the day, not just stiff, staged images. For the foreseeable future (specifically in 2026), wedding photographers like myself are receiving a high number of inquiries from couples who are requesting BTS content creation/short reels, a "candid" feel to their wedding album and longer coverage times to accommodate a slower and more intentional timeline - telling the story of the day as it actually unfolds.
Expect:
Minimalism - clean tablescapes, thoughtful favors + emphasis on guest experiences
Laughter, tears and honest emotion
Photos that feel authentic, connection driven and emotional
Trendy, TikTok inspired reels, short BTS clips and real life wedding "bloopers"
FLash photos
My number one reception request for 2026 wedding couples is: FLASH PHOTOS
This trend is not dying off any time soon, and I AM HERE FOR IT.
Expect:
Dramatic cake cutting photos feat. harsh flash
Dancefloor flash candids
Champagne towers + late night snacks + FLASH
